Jason first decided he wanted to play guitar after hearing Guns n Roses “Appetite for Destruction”, Jason says, “the music on that album was like nothing I’d heard before, and Slash’s Guitar solo on “Sweet Child o Mine” was nothing short of genius. I begged my mum to buy me a guitar, although we never really had money, she reluctantly agreed. I went to lessons for about 6 months, but couldn’t afford to keep them going. It was then that I found out that a good friend and brilliant guitarist, Mitchell Hutchinson, could give me cheap lessons, but I had to miss an afternoon of school to get to them, surprisingly my mother agreed to it. Mitchell went on to be in plenty of bands in Australia and overseas, and is currently playing in “ Doc Neeson’s Angels”. “
When he was about 15 he started some “roady” work with bands like “Raw Material” and “Midian”. Jason looks back in disbelief at this learning Experience, and remembers it being a lot of fun.
Like any teenager with a guitar, Jason joined some friends and did nothing but play music whenever we could, and like most teenage bands, they went nowhere. Jason played a few high school events on Bass, and completed his senior high school Certificate on Bass, at this point Jason was wondering if he had wasted his guitar lessons, because he liked playing Bass so much more.
After school Jason joined a few unknown bands performing at numerous venues then like most bands everyone ended up going their separate ways. Jason decided to give up playing for awhile, but that was short lived as when he caught up with an old friend, Ashley Sky, “We got together and wrote some songs and started jamming with a few different people, when we thought we had a band ready we played a couple of small gigs under the name “Pole Story” , we thought we were going to be huge!” After about 2 years together of hard work and no real breaks Jason left the band.
Jason was desperate to pursue his passion for music and tried many more avenues to start a new band, but after a couple of failed attempts with some very strange characters who thought they were already rock stars, Jase decided it was time to “get a haircut and a real job”, So he did, and as far as Jason thought his music career was finished, in Jason’s words he had become a lounge room musician, he was lucky enough to keep in touch with a lot of great musicians. “My luck really came through when I was in between jobs and I went to see my old neighbor and friend Shane McLeay”, and the rest they say is history.
Jason is now playing bass with Shane McLeay, co producing Shane new album “Odyssey” and has co written some of the songs on the forthcoming album as well. Shane is quoted as saying “as a bass player Jason Brooks knows where he is going and is more than capable of holding down the bottom end of our sound.
Thanks for your time Jason
